Liposuction Recovery: When Can I Go To The Gym Again?
- Posted on: Jun 30 2018
What a great question! Did you know that Liposuction (Lipo, for short) is not actually a recommended surgery for weight loss? The best results are seen on patients who already live an active lifestyle, and are looking to remove those stubborn lumps of fat from areas that don’t respond to diet or exercise anymore. As we age, our metabolisms slow down so it’s no surprise that the muffin top or belly that used to disappear with a few sit ups is sticking around. Keep reading to learn the differences between Liposuction and what we perform here at DuPage Dermatology & Aesthetics: Tumescent Liposuction.
First, we should clarify that because each patient is different, each Liposuction surgery will be different. We tailor the surgery to each patient’s specific needs and problem areas they want addressed.
Traditional Liposuction is typically performed under general or local anesthesia and is generally an outpatient procedure. Tumescent Liposuction is similar, except when anesthesia is concerned. Namely, Tumescent Liposuction refers to a form of liposuction that uses tumescent local anesthesia. During Tumescent Liposuction, a large amount of diluted solution containing local anesthesia (lidocaine and epinephrine) is injected into the fat beneath the skin. This process helps minimize risks associated with traditional Liposuction, such as excessive surgical bleeding and the traditional risks of general anesthesia.
After Liposuction and Tumescent Liposuction, your body still needs time to recuperate. Set aside a few days to rest and let your body heal. Any surgery will require some extra care on your part to ensure the smoothest recovery, and Liposuction is no different.
One big difference between traditional Liposuction and Tumescent Liposuction is the recovery time. Tumescent Liposuction is a safer procedure, a less painful procedure, and will require less postoperative recovery time than traditional Liposuction.
